- Unique, interdisciplinary approach to coursework with a low student to faculty ratio
- Hands-on research experience
- Work in state-of-the-art facilities
Anyone with an interest in the interaction between matter and energy can minor in the Physics program at Converse. Converse’s Physics minor is an excellent supplement to not only our science majors but also to our math, computer science, engineering and pre-med majors. Our Physics students acquire problem-solving and technological skills in our traditional liberal arts foundation.
As of the Fall 2023 semester, students cannot declare a minor in Physics. Current students who previously declared a minor in Physics will be advised through their required coursework throughout the 2023-24 and 2024-25 academic years. Once their studies are complete, a Physics minor will no longer be conferred by Converse University.

About Physics
Physics is sometimes referred to as the ‘liberal arts of science.’ Physics examines matter and energy, and their interactions. But what does this really mean? Physics is about asking fundamental questions and trying to answer them by observing and experimenting. Rather than focusing on a specific career path, the Converse physics minor helps you develop skills applicable to many careers. As a Physics minor you will learn how to use mathematics to develop solutions to complex problems. These are highly valuable skills in every industry. A minor in physics is especially applicable to jobs in finance, computer science or programming, healthcare, and engineering.
Research
Many aspiring scientists have to wait until graduate school to begin conducting original research. But as a Converse physics minor, you’ll be exposed to research opportunities as an undergraduate. Working independently or side-by-side with faculty mentors, our students have won awards at state, regional, and national conferences.
Travel
Converse’s study abroad and study travel programs allow you to experience a whole new way of living while earning college credit. Brianne Cross Leftwich went to Costa Rica with Physics professor Elena Méndez to conduct an archeoastronomy project. Working with Professor Méndez, Brianne measured the direction of an ancient road believed to have pointed to a star. This star could have been part of a ritual in the early Costa Rican civilization of the area.
As a Physics minor, you will study major concepts in Physics. In courses such as The Elements of Physics and Essential Physics, you will learn about mechanics, properties of matter, heat, and sound and use calculus to derive relationships and find solutions to problems.
By studying physics you will gain a high level of critical thinking skills and develop a fundamental understanding of complex math.
A Physics minor shows employers you are not afraid of a challenge and are good with numbers. Even if you don’t choose a career in science, studying Physics shows that you are a good problem solver. A Physics minor will complement most any major you choose at Converse, and most especially will enhance your experience as a science major.
